What is PHP? Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) is a general-purpose programming language that runs on a web server and is similar to other server-side scripting languages such as Microsoft's ASP and Suns' JSP. PHP is the code source used in the development of many frameworks that provide building blocks and a design structure to promote rapid application development (RAD) such as CakePHP, Symfony, CodeIgniter, and Zend Framework. Since PHP 4 (now at PHP 5+), the PHP parser compiles input to produce bytecode for processing by the Zend Engine, giving greatly improved performance over its interpreter predecessor. It is available free of charge by the PHP Group whom provide the complete source code for programmers to build, customise and extend as they see fit.
What is PHP used for? PHP code is generally used to create dynamic web page content. A tiny example of what PHP code does for an e-commerce website is to display products from a database and calculate your shopping cart items and totals etc. As of April 2007, over 20 million websites were hosted on servers with PHP installed and PHP was recorded as the most popular Apache server module.
